So you bought that great dress you saw in a fashion magazine. It looked really nice on the model, but there is something just not right about the way it fits you. What is wrong?
What went wrong was that you didn’t think about your shape. Your body shape can turn a ho-hum dress into a wow! Unfortunately it can also change the trendiest of dresses into a fashion don’t. You need to calculate your shape and then shop with your shape in mind.
No, this isn’t taking the fun out of shopping. It is putting the fun back in. Think of all the complements that will start pouring in when your clothes fit well. Think of all the money you will save by actually wearing the clothes in your closet.
Now to calculate your shape you need either a full length mirror or a really good friend with a digital camera. Wearing a swimsuit, tights, a catsuit or biker shorts and a tank top with a hint of spandex (anything that will show you the shape of your body,) stand in front of the full length mirror or let your friend take a full length photo.
There are six body shapes:
Round
Inverted Triangle
Hourglass
Pear
Diamond
Straight
Now take a good look. Is your shape Round?A woman who has a round shape has a generous bust line with a fuller back and rib cage. She has a waist line that is generous, narrow hips and lovely, slender legs.
So what should this shape wear? V-neck tops are a great way to elongate and slenderize the neckline. You want to stay away from fitted tops. Fitted tops will only draw attention to your waistline and fuller bust. Free flowing tunics are the ticket. If you wear jackets, narrow collars and single button styles are best for not drawing attention to your fuller bust and waistline.
Show off your great legs. Leggings are best with a great tunic look. Lucky you can wear a slim skirt to show off your hips and legs. The carwash hem, with a few buttons discretely opened is also a nice flirty, casual look.
Are you an Inverted Triangle?Do you have broad shoulders, a medium bust line, average waist and narrow hips with lovely, shapely legs?
This body type wants to balance out those broad shoulders and enhance those great hips and lovely legs. Balance out your upper and lower torso by wearing lighter colors on the bottom half. Try a flared skirt or those trendy, wide leg pants. V-necklines will elongate your upper torso and lead the viewer’s eyes down away from your shoulders. A wide belt worn over a big shirt low on the hips is also a good bet.
Is your figure the classic Hourglass? This figure has a bust, small well-defined waist, curvy hips and shapely legs and sometimes a protruding bottom.
You have an easy shape to dress. Celebrate it with soft fabrics, wrap dresses, and belts that lay at your waistline. A small waist helps the taller woman look more balanced. If you are shorter de-emphasize your waist a little so you won’t look cut in half. Stay away from oversized or too fitted styles, stick with semi-fitted clothing. An hourglass is every woman’s dream figure, do your best to wear clothing that emphases your curves.
The woman with a Pear shaped body has a slender neck, narrow shoulders, a small bust, a shapely waist and generous hips and thighs. You have a small, feminine waistline embrace it. Choose flowing fabrics, wide leg pants are best to de-emphasize your hips and thighs. Straight skirts can be your friend. You want to pull attention toward your upper body. Cowl neck tops and boat neck or square necklines can help give you the illusion of broader shoulders.
The Diamond and Pear shaped women are similar. The Diamond has narrow shoulders, a small bust with generous hips and thighs. The Diamond is curvier than the pear and is narrower on top with a fuller bottom. Stay away from cuffed pants or pants with detail along the hem. Cuffs and detail can draw the eye making you look larger on the bottom and shorter. Tapered legs are a good bet. Jackets and tops should not pull across your hips or bottom they should flare gently over those trouble spots.
The woman with a straight body type has an upper and lower torso equal in width. Her bust is average, with a large rib cage, undefined waist line, a flat bottom and slender legs.
The trick for this body type is to create waist definition with vertical lines that curve at the waist. Princess seams are great for you. The empire waist line is your friend, as well as the dropped waist. You don’t need gathers or pleats at your waist. Knit pants work well with your flat bottom.
As you can see different women come in different shapes. A woman needs to dress for her shape. Dressing for your shape will take the confusion out of shopping and put the fun back in. Enjoy.
