How to Dress for Your Shape

So you bought that great dress you saw in a fashion magazine. It looked really nice on the model, but there is something just not right about the way it fits you. What is wrong?

What went wrong was that you didn’t think about your shape. Your body shape can turn a ho-hum dress into a wow! Unfortunately it can also change the trendiest of dresses into a fashion don’t. You need to calculate your shape and then shop with your shape in mind.

No, this isn’t taking the fun out of shopping. It is putting the fun back in. Think of all the complements that will start pouring in when your clothes fit well. Think of all the money you will save by actually wearing the clothes in your closet.

Now to calculate your shape you need either a full length mirror or a really good friend with a digital camera. Wearing a swimsuit, tights, a catsuit or biker shorts and a tank top with a hint of spandex (anything that will show you the shape of your body,) stand in front of the full length mirror or let your friend take a full length photo.

There are six body shapes:

Inverted Triangle

Now take a good look. Is your shape Round?A woman who has a round shape has a generous bust line with a fuller back and rib cage. She has a waist line that is generous, narrow hips and lovely, slender legs.

So what should this shape wear? V-neck tops are a great way to elongate and slenderize the neckline. You want to stay away from fitted tops. Fitted tops will only draw attention to your waistline and fuller bust. Free flowing tunics are the ticket. If you wear jackets, narrow collars and single button styles are best for not drawing attention to your fuller bust and waistline.

Show off your great legs. Leggings are best with a great tunic look. Lucky you can wear a slim skirt to show off your hips and legs. The carwash hem, with a few buttons discretely opened is also a nice flirty, casual look.

Are you an Inverted Triangle?Do you have broad shoulders, a medium bust line, average waist and narrow hips with lovely, shapely legs?

This body type wants to balance out those broad shoulders and enhance those great hips and lovely legs. Balance out your upper and lower torso by wearing lighter colors on the bottom half. Try a flared skirt or those trendy, wide leg pants. V-necklines will elongate your upper torso and lead the viewer’s eyes down away from your shoulders. A wide belt worn over a big shirt low on the hips is also a good bet.

Is your figure the classic Hourglass? This figure has a bust, small well-defined waist, curvy hips and shapely legs and sometimes a protruding bottom.

You have an easy shape to dress. Celebrate it with soft fabrics, wrap dresses, and belts that lay at your waistline. A small waist helps the taller woman look more balanced. If you are shorter de-emphasize your waist a little so you won’t look cut in half. Stay away from oversized or too fitted styles, stick with semi-fitted clothing. An hourglass is every woman’s dream figure, do your best to wear clothing that emphases your curves.

The woman with a Pear shaped body has a slender neck, narrow shoulders, a small bust, a shapely waist and generous hips and thighs. You have a small, feminine waistline embrace it. Choose flowing fabrics, wide leg pants are best to de-emphasize your hips and thighs. Straight skirts can be your friend. You want to pull attention toward your upper body. Cowl neck tops and boat neck or square necklines can help give you the illusion of broader shoulders.

The Diamond and Pear shaped women are similar. The Diamond has narrow shoulders, a small bust with generous hips and thighs. The Diamond is curvier than the pear and is narrower on top with a fuller bottom. Stay away from cuffed pants or pants with detail along the hem. Cuffs and detail can draw the eye making you look larger on the bottom and shorter. Tapered legs are a good bet. Jackets and tops should not pull across your hips or bottom they should flare gently over those trouble spots.

The woman with a straight body type has an upper and lower torso equal in width. Her bust is average, with a large rib cage, undefined waist line, a flat bottom and slender legs.

The trick for this body type is to create waist definition with vertical lines that curve at the waist. Princess seams are great for you. The empire waist line is your friend, as well as the dropped waist. You don’t need gathers or pleats at your waist. Knit pants work well with your flat bottom.

As you can see different women come in different shapes. A woman needs to dress for her shape. Dressing for your shape will take the confusion out of shopping and put the fun back in. Enjoy.

Recently we had the pleasure of watching Marissa Jaret Winokur on Dancing With The Stars. Marissa is short, round and full of fun and energy. When asked why she took on the challange she said that she wanted to prove that you don’t need to be a size two to dance.
Way to go Marissa! You can still catch episodes of DWTS on if you would like to catch her in action.
I was reminded of Marissa and her success when I came across a great CD called Dance Like No One’s Watching. I love to dance, I love to sing and this CD has it all for me. Disco, Pop, Soul if you are from my era and even if you’re not you’ll love this music. This is music for women. Pop this CD in the player, throw up the shades and dance like no one’s watching.

Amazing Edible Masks For Your Face by Ken Black

There are all types of skin care products currently on the market, most of which contain ingredients that can’t even be pronounced. Chemicals, synthetic materials, and even oils are found in many face washes and masks on the market, which can be hazardous to your skin and even cause allergic reactions. They can get pretty pricey too, especially if you buy one that you end up throwing away because it doesn’t work well with your skin type. Luckily, there still is a way to keep your skin looking great without having to worry about what you’re using on your face.

Making your own natural skin care recipes is not only simple, but it can be so much fun. You can even use the leftovers for a snack while you relax, and let the natural ingredients go to work. You don’t have to visit a specialty store or buy products online to make your own edible masks; you can actually find everything you need at your local grocery store. Fruits, vegetables, and even oatmeal can work wonders on your face, as long as they are used correctly and mixed with the right ingredients.

Cucumbers are a great way to reduce any puffiness you may have under your eyes, and you can eat them right after you use them if you like. Take two thin slices and place one on top of each eye, and leave for about five minutes. When done on a daily or weekly basis, your eyes will be looking great in no time.

Oatmeal is another food item that works wonders for the skin, and it can be used as a mask or a scrub. Strawberries, watermelon, honey, and even eggs make great masks, or you can add some salt or olive oil to turn them into exfoliating scrubs. The possibilities really are endless when it comes to using food on your face.

Honey is one of the best products to use on your face. Use a warm wash cloth over you face to open your pores, and then smear on the honey on your entire face. You can add some oatmeal if you have oily skin, since it works to soak up any extra moisture. Leave on your face for about 20 minutes, rinse with warm water, and apply a wash cloth with cold water to close your pores.

Raw eggs also make great face masks, and you can use either the yolk or the white. The yolks work best for dry skin, while the whites are better for oily or normal skin. Beat the portion of the egg you want to use, and apply to your face and neck. Leave on until it dries, and wash off with warm water. Your skin will feel smooth, tight, and flawless after using a raw egg mask.

Watermelon and strawberries are great for the skin, since they are both packed full of rich vitamins and nutrients. You can mash up some watermelon in a bowl, and make sure to remove any seeds. Adding strawberry juice to the mix if you have sensitive skin or sunburn, since it works to soothe and repair your skin. Apply the thick juice to your face, and leave on for about 30 minutes while the juices tighten your pores and cleanse your skin. Your skin will feel naturally smoother and tighter after your first application, and works just as well as facelift creams found in beauty stores.

Papaya works as a great ingredient in exfoliates, since it is packed full of vitamins and enzymes. You can mix the fruit with oatmeal and water, and your skin will be naturally smoother and blemish free after only a few applications. You can make a thicker paste formula and use it as a mask with the same ingredients, just by adding less water and juice to the oatmeal. Leave on until it dries, and wash off with warm water for the full effect.

Brown rice flour mixed with a small amount of lemon juice makes a wonderful mask as well, and works great for those with extra oil on their skin. Mix about 2 tablespoons of the flour with a small amount of lemon juice into a paste, but make sure you include some of the pulp in the mix. Leave on for about 15 minutes or until it is dry, and your skin will be tighter, smoother, and free of excess oil.

Many of the food items that are healthy to eat are also healthy for our skin. Fruits, vegetables, and many other ingredients give our skin the rich vitamins and nutrients it needs to look healthy, and it doesn’t cost a lot either. Next time you are at the store and need to buy facial products, head for the food section rather than the face wash isle.
